DESCRIPTION:September 28th 2024  \n1-2pm (€10/€8) \nJoin Cruit Éireann | Harp Ireland and Music for Wexford in St Iberius Church to hear one of Ireland’s foremost harpers\, Tríona Marshall\, perform a concert celebrating our national instrument. We are delighted that Tríona will be joined by the Wexford Harp Ensemble – Cruitirí Loch Garman\, directed by Aileen Kennedy as part of Music for Wexford’s “side by side” initiative\, giving amateur musicians the opportunity to perform alongside professionals. \nTríona Marshall has played with The Chieftains since 2003\, performing at festivals and concert halls around the world and in the USA\, Japan\, China and Australia. She has recorded extensively with The Chieftains and was principal harpist with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra\,  having completed her studies at the London’s Royal College of Music and the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. In 2013\, along with The Chieftains\, Triona was awarded an honorary doctorate from Dublin Institute of Technology in recognition of her contribution to Irish music.   \n  Cruitirí Loch Garman – Wexford Harp Ensemble directed by Aileen Kennedy\, are based in Co. Wexford consists of over 20 harp players who play and sing all types of music and songs at events both locally and internationally. Aileen\, a former member of the Belfast Harp Orchestra\, has enjoyed success at many harp festivals over the years\, winning the Nobber\, Granard and Keadue festivals and some of her compositions are held in the National Library of Wales. \n  \n  \nTickets available here.

DESCRIPTION:Experience a new ‘take’ on Irish harping from some of our foremost young harpers.  Cruit Éireann|Harp Ireland’s Sugar Club Harp Sessions run throughout 2024 and feature innovative\, cutting-edge Irish harp performances from a variety of players\, pushing the boundaries of the tradition in new and exciting ways.\n\n\n\n\nOur fifth concert on Thursday 17th October 2024 features harping duo Aisling Urwin and Niamh O’Brien and solo artist Méabh McKenna. \nNiamh O’ Brien and Aisling Urwin are a duo of harpers from the Southwest of Ireland. Their music is rooted in the Irish tradition but has expanded throughout their careers to include world\, contemporary\, original\, folk and electronic influences. \nIn 2021\, after doing some performances together for Harp Ireland’s Lá na Cruite\, they decided to embark upon a duo project. \nAisling and Niamh believe there is something unique and wonderful in the sound of two harps playing together. Harpers so often play solo\, so it has been so exciting for them to play and arrange together. They combine their own individual styles of playing\, the particular complexities of their harps which come from different makers\, and their voices as they are both singers. They are deeply passionate about the harp\, its community and its rich history.They are currently working on an EP of innovative arrangements of old harping tunes and new compositions. \nUtilising the harp\, voice\, electronics and percussion\, Méabh McKenna is a multi-instrumental sound artist based in Dublin city. Drawing on years of experimentation and collaboration\, her live performances have evolved from traversing the eclectic worlds of traditional\, classical\, and early music\, intuitively weaving them with contemporary and electronic elements. Méabh’s solo project forges a soundworld of mycelial improvisation and memory\, connecting the ancient with the futuristic to make a music of resonance and reflection that’s entirely her own. \n\nTickets available here.

Hugh Higgins\, ‘a harper of distinction’\, was born in the Barony of Tirawley in county Mayo. His attendance at the celebrated Belfast Harp festival in 1792 ensured part of his repertoire survives. From harper Arthur O’Neill’s memoirs Higgins was an ‘Irish gentleman-harper\, uncommonly genteel in his manners\, and as to his dress … he spared no expense in purchasing clothes. He travelled in such a manner as does and will do credit to an Irish Harper’. With historic references\, anecdotes and tunes a picture of the persona of harper Hugh Higgins unfolds. Tickets available here. \nKillarney: Killarney School Of Music will host an informal fun harp session with Marina Biddy Blyth and Killarney Harp Club\, with guests\, where harpers can join in with a tune\, do a solo or just be part of the session. Venue: Room 10\, Killarney School of Music. Free Admission. \nBack to Dingle for a free lunchtime concert at An Diseart Chapel.
