Lá na Cruite | Harp Day … And that’s a Wrap!

This weekend saw harpers light up cities and counties across Ireland and the world with the best of harp music. With 100s of events in arts centres, concert halls, shopping centres, libraries, hilltops and on city streets – harpers answered our call.

Through Lá na Cruite|Harp Day, we set out to make  Irish harping more accessible so that more people can ‘try their hands’, or learn to play it, and even more people have a chance to experience its magical music in a variety of different ways. And the pictures and videos you have posted online of your performances are a tribute to each and every one of you.

Ár mbuíochas ó chroí do chruitirí a sheinn togha na cruitireachta ó cheann ceann na tíre ar feadh an lae.

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everybody here and across the world who participated – from harp ensembles to solo harpers to those hard-working harp carriers, who transported  their young harpers to our various venues in time to join in the celebration.

Once again, we were delighted to welcome our global harp ambassadors to our Lá na Cruite Harpers’ Call with tunes coming in from Australia to Japan to the US, and farther afield. These are now live on our interactive map https://www.harpireland.ie/interactive-map-2025/ and on our Harpers’ Call page https://www.harpireland.ie/harpers-call-schedule-2025/.

A reminder that if you have a harp to share with somebody who needs one, and you wish to donate it to us, we are very happy to accept it for their use.

Our thanks to our funders for their support – The Arts Council, The Heritage Council, Local Authority Arts Offices and Libraries countrywide,  RTÉ Supporting the Arts and RTÉ lyric fm.   Without your help this would not happen.

In the meantime, start planning for Lá na Cruite| Harp Day 2026 – Saturday October 17th and If you would like to organise an event we’d love to hear from you.

Bígí páirteach, bígí linn. Please contact us at info@harpireland.ie.

Co. AntrimSeamus Heaney Centre, Queen's University BelfastSaturday 18 October, 1.15pm

Heaney’s Irish language translations through the lens of the Irish music tradition. From Buile Shuibhne (Sweeney Astray), the medieval tale of the mad bird-king of Antrim’s Dál nAraidhe, to his favourite song An Bonnán Buí (The Yellow Bittern), Heaney found fertile soil for his imagination in the songs and stories of his ancestors.
Aoibheann Devlin, Déaglán Ó Doibhlin and Sorcha Uí Chuireáin present lore, song, poetry and music on fiddle and medieval wire-strung Gaelic harp. All three are members of the group Lí Ban and hail from the shores of Heaney’s beloved Lough Beg. Expect insights into the poet’s relationship with his native tongue.
