O’Carolan as Cultural Icon: the Making of a Reputation

This illustrated talk by Luke Gibbons will address how harper and poet Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) became an Irish cultural icon, the first figure from Gaelic Ireland to establish a presence on the national and International stage. The reasons for this have to do with European influences on O’Carolan, in the form of Italian Baroque music, as well as his influence, in turn, on the rise of Irish cultural nationalism, and its appeal to European Romanticism. Central also to O’Carolan’s international reputation was his contribution to Irish diasporic culture in the United States and Canada, and his later formative role in the Irish Cultural Revival at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The Carolan Collective

In cooperation with Harp Ireland and to celebrate Lá na Cruite | Harp Day 2026, members of the Carolan Collective – including some Roscommon harpers playing both ancient wire-strung and modern harps – will perform a selection of local music and song in the luxurious Kilronan Castle in North Roscommon. Located less than two kilometres from Carolan’s grave in the ruins of Kilronan Abbey (14th century), why not take the opportunity for an afternoon stroll and visit the last resting place of the blind bard on the picturesque shore of Lough Meelagh, followed by some restorative refreshments, fine food and wonderful music and song in Kilronan Castle.

Premiere: Ceol Uisce

This special Cruit Éireann|Harp Ireland commission for Lá na Cruite 2026, was composed by Aisling Ennis. The piece explores how water has shaped Wicklow’s landscape and the lives of its people. Its sources include St Kevin of Glendalough, the waterways that powered lead and silver mining in Glenmalure, a fisherman’s song for attracting seals, and the Irish Sea with its marine life. The names of Wicklow’s rivers and lakes are woven into the music, celebrating these waterways as part of the county’s natural, social and cultural life.
